11/20/10 HOW DO YOU MAKE A MAGPIE?! PART 2
I will admit I am not a fan of this "top secret" strategy-though of course it has worked for Coca Cola and Kentucky Fried Chicken!
In the case of animals the appreciation factor appears at times to be based on what the animals can do, as shallow as that seems. Thus some amazing animals fell out of favor because of not knowing the full potential. The question must be asked that if that information was provided would that have been the case. At this point I do think the door has been opened and everyone does now know that it isn't over until it's over and no variation should be overlooked. This is even made more obvious by the comments in the interview regarding the fact that even a gene carrier of a trait can add to the mix-a heterozygous animal not even showing the trait itself!
We have always been on the side of wanting to put out the information and this has been received with great response and sometimes not so great response-meaning the not great response questioned why we would reveal the "how to." Our answer has always been that we want people to know more about their animals, and be successful on every level.
In regards to top secret ingredients that is more of a personal decision-and of course I get the "business" strategy. In snake breeding there is the how to, time commitment, and the expense, which I think mitigates it being analagous to cooking with a recipe where one could just replicate it by purchasing the ingredients. The evidence of this is they keep these recipe's locked in a vault-so they must feel threatened if someone get's hold of them. I'm not threatened by revealing a combination I used to make a snake because I know there are a lot of other things involved in making them!
My job is to have you look at another group of snakes with the same keen eye you have used with Ball pythons. If the point of the use of the name on his creation is to distract you from the Blood pythons then for his part I guess it might be a good business strategy! I say do not substitute one for the other you may be surprised you like both!
