04/13/11 THE VPI 66% HET CHALLENGE!
Is this a het? Well at this point it is a possible het, one of the females I have kept over the years. I've never sold a possible het. I haven't made that many since most of our breedings have produced Caramel albinos or 100% hets, but in the beginning when I was working out how the trait worked and had limited numbers of animals to breed I bred het to what turned out to be normal and made 50% hets and het to het which made VPI caramel and 66% hets.
It is not like I did not try to sell possible hets. I did at one time offer them for sale. But at the time I wasn't able to convince anyone they were indeed possible hets. As time went by and I didn't get any reponses, I started to get some litters from 100% hets. I pulled out as many as 8 Caramel Albinos from several litters, and it occurred to me that if I sold someone a possible het for very little money and it turned out to be a het, wow I knew they would be thrilled, but I would feel better if I would have done that right here at VPI! I would be just fine putting in the extra work and time and raising the poss hets myself. What was the worst that could happen-I had a fantastic female normal boa that I raised myself and she could be a great match for all kinds of project males. It was settled. I would not sell any possible het VPI Caramel females.
